Kagyu College - History

In 1986, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang established Jangchubling, the Drikung Kagyu Institute, in Dehra Dun. Since its inception the Institute has been functioning as a successful center for learning.

The subjects taught at the Institute cover the whole range of Buddhist teachings and the number of monk students has been increasing steadily.

However, due to the lack of a separate monastery for the practice of monastic liturgies and rituals as well as to the increasing demands by lay people for performances of prayer, the monk-students faced some inconveniences in their philosophical studies.

Considering this, the concerned Khenpos and teachers formed a committee in the beginning of the year 2002, and sought the view of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang regarding their plan to establish a separate school, where the comprehensive study of Buddhist Philosophy would be available. His Holiness readily approved and named it Kagyu College.

The College was built on a beautiful and peaceful stretch of land near Songtsen Library and was inaugurated in 2005.
